About the Role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and forward-thinking Principal Transport Planner to join a progressive local authority in Herefordshire. This pivotal role offers the chance to shape the future of transport across the county, influence strategic transport decisions, secure investment, and deliver innovative solutions that improve connectivity, support economic growth, and contribute to a sustainable future.
Working within the Transport Planning Team, you will play a leading role in developing transport strategies, securing funding opportunities, and ensuring transport priorities align with wider council objectives, including housing growth, climate change initiatives, public health, and economic development.
Key Responsibilities:
β’ Lead the development and delivery of strategic transport policies and programmes
β’ Support the development and implementation of the Local Transport Plan and wider transport strategies
β’ Develop local and regional rail and bus strategies
β’ Identify and secure external transport funding opportunities
β’ Commission and manage transport-related projects and initiatives
β’ Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, communities, and partner organisations
β’ Undertake policy horizon scanning and strategic planning activities
β’ Support infrastructure planning to facilitate housing and economic growth
β’ Address key transport challenges including rural connectivity, sustainable travel, and urban mobility
β’ Provide strategic advice and influence transport-related decision-making across the authority
Requirements:
β’ Degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in Transport Planning, Planning, Geography, or a related discipline
β’ Sound understanding of transport policy, legislation, and sustainable transport initiatives
β’ Experience developing transport strategies and policies across multiple transport modes
β’ Knowledge of statutory and national policy frameworks for local transport planning
β’ Strong stakeholder engagement and partnership-building skills
β’ Ability to influence decision-making and deliver strategic outcomes
β’ Excellent communication, project management, and analytical skills
β’ Commitment to improving transport accessibility and sustainability
