About the Role

We are currently recruiting for an exciting opportunity for an experienced Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) to join Barnet Council on a full-time basis.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality, independent and trauma-informed support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse, working closely with statutory and community partners to safeguard vulnerable adults, children and families.

You will assess individual needs and risks, develop appropriate safety and support plans, advocate on behalf of victims and survivors, and work collaboratively with partner agencies to achieve positive outcomes.

The role will involve managing a varied caseload within an appropriate supervision framework and contributing to the development and delivery of Barnet’s Domestic Abuse Support Hub (BDASH).

⚠️ Please note: This is not a home-working role. The position requires regular face-to-face work, office attendance and visits to families and individuals within the community. Any flexibility will be service-led and dependent on operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Support to Victims and Survivors

• Provide emotional and practical support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.
• Undertake comprehensive risk assessments, including the use of DASH, and develop appropriate safety plans.
• Develop and implement tailored support plans based on individual needs, circumstances and levels of risk.
• Support victims through criminal, civil and family justice processes, including court attendance and applications for special measures.
• Facilitate access to safe accommodation, healthcare, legal advice and other appropriate services.
• Undertake proactive casework and assertive outreach to reduce risk and improve safety.
• Conduct community and home visits where required.
• Work jointly with partner agencies and participate in case reviews and professional meetings.
• Advocate effectively for victims and survivors, ensuring their views are heard and accurately recorded.
• Assess and balance risk and protective factors within relevant legislation, policy and best-practice frameworks.
• Build respectful, professional and safe relationships with victims, survivors and their families where appropriate.
• Undertake risk-reduction interventions and use effective problem-solving approaches.
• Identify and address child and adult safeguarding concerns promptly and in accordance with relevant procedures.

Multi-Agency Working

• Act as a key partner at MARAC, MAPPA and other safeguarding forums.
• Work closely with professionals across housing, health, education, policing and social care.
• Ensure assessments incorporate relevant information and professional perspectives from partner agencies.
• Maintain effective communication and liaison with other professionals.
• Share relevant information appropriately and lawfully to reduce risk, promote welfare and prevent crime, in accordance with data protection legislation and GDPR.
• Attend Child in Need, Child Protection and Adult and Families review meetings as required.
• Develop and maintain effective multi-agency relationships.
• Contribute to projects and service developments that promote integrated and multidisciplinary working.
• Deliver training and awareness sessions to colleagues and other professionals on domestic abuse and gender-based violence.
• Act as a single point of contact for victims and survivors where appropriate, helping to simplify communication and minimise the risk of further trauma.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

• A Level 3 regulated qualification in supporting victims of domestic abuse, such as SafeLives IDVA training or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• A minimum of 2 years’ post-qualification experience working in an IDVA or closely related domestic abuse support role.
• A satisfactory Enhanced DBS.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of domestic abuse legislation and safeguarding frameworks, including the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, Children Act 1989 and Care Act 2014.
• Knowledge of civil, family and criminal justice processes, including protective orders and special measures.
• Experience using risk assessment tools such as DASH and undertaking effective safety planning.
• A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and the intersectional needs of victims and survivors of domestic abuse.
• Experience working collaboratively with statutory and voluntary sector agencies.
• Excellent communication, advocacy and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to manage a varied caseload and work effectively within a multi-agency environment.
