About the Role:
We are currently recruiting on behalf of our local authority client in Darlington for an experienced Housing Options Officer to join their Housing Services team on a locum temporary contract. This role is pivotal in delivering high-quality housing advice and homelessness prevention services, supporting individuals and families to secure safe, suitable, and sustainable accommodation.

Key Responsibilities:
• Provide comprehensive advice, support, and guidance on temporary and permanent housing options
• Manage a caseload of homelessness and potential homelessness applications
• Interview homeless or potentially homeless applicants and assess eligibility
• Investigate circumstances, verify information, prepare reports, and make recommendations
• Prevent homelessness through negotiation with landlords, applicants, and partner agencies
• Carry out home visits and basic property inspections as required
• Arrange temporary accommodation and participate in an out-of-hours homelessness rota
• Promote Council housing policies and alternative housing pathways, including Housing Associations and the private rented sector
• Liaise effectively with internal departments and external statutory and voluntary agencies
• Attend and contribute to multi-agency meetings

Requirements:
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience within housing, social care, or a related field
• Strong working knowledge of homelessness legislation and housing law
• Understanding of health and disability issues impacting housing suitability
• Experience working with statutory, voluntary, and partner agencies
• Knowledge of local housing and accommodation resources within Darlington
• Ability to work under pressure, prioritise workloads, and meet deadlines
• Confident decision-maker able to interpret complex legislation and case information
• IT literate, with experience using MS Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office
• Willingness to participate in out-of-hours on-call duties
• Ability to travel independently to undertake home visits and inspections
