About the Role:
Milton Keynes Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assessment Officer β Housing Benefits / Welfare to join their team. This role offers an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact within the local community by supporting residents to access their welfare and benefits entitlements, while working within a supportive local authority environment.
Key Responsibilities:
β’ Assess residentsβ financial circumstances and identify opportunities to maximise income through benefits, grants, budgeting, and debt advice
β’ Conduct structured and sensitive interviews to gather relevant financial and personal information
β’ Provide clear, accurate advice on the UK welfare benefits system, including Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Personal Independence Payment, and other statutory entitlements
β’ Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and policy changes affecting welfare rights
β’ Maintain accurate records and use case management systems and online benefits tools effectively
β’ Manage a caseload efficiently, prioritising tasks and working independently or collaboratively within a team
β’ Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all interactions with residents and colleagues
Requirements:
β’ Strong working knowledge of the UK welfare benefits system and relevant legislation
β’ Proven experience supporting vulnerable residents in sensitive situations
β’ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and empathetically
β’ IT literate, with experience using case management systems and online benefits tools
β’ Ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritise workload effectively
