About the Role:
We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a qualified Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join Worcestershire County Council’s newly established AMHP Hub, based at Wildwood.
This specialist hub is staffed exclusively by AMHPs and acts as the single point of contact for all Mental Health Act referral requests, supporting the Local Authority’s statutory duty to provide 24/7 AMHP cover, 365 days a year. This is a unique opportunity to work within a dedicated, professional environment focused entirely on Mental Health Act work, supported by strong leadership, structured systems, and regular supervision.
As an AMHP, you will carry out the full statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended), working closely with health partners, Police, Courts, and the West Midlands Ambulance Service in complex and high-risk situations. The role also includes professional leadership responsibilities and support for AMHP trainees.
Working Pattern:
Flexible working across a 7-day rota, including a mixture of:
• Early: 08:00 – 19:00
• Late: 11:00 – 22:00
• Night: 21:30 – 08:30
Regular formal and informal supervision is provided, alongside ongoing professional development opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
• Undertake statutory AMHP duties in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983 and Code of Practice
• Convene and complete Mental Health Act assessments across a variety of settings including community, hospitals, police stations, courts, prisons, and places of safety
• Make independent decisions regarding hospital admissions, CTOs, and Guardianship applications
• Prepare reports and applications for Magistrates’ Courts, including Mental Health Act warrants
• Present evidence relating to Acting Nearest Relative appointments
• Provide expert consultation and leadership within Adults Services
• Support and supervise Worcestershire AMHP trainees
• Manage and prioritise referrals and deputise for the Team Manager when required
• Promote equality, challenge discrimination, and uphold individuals’ rights and dignity
• Maintain high standards of recording, reporting, and professional accountability
• Work collaboratively with partner agencies to deliver safe, lawful, and person-centred outcomes
• Demonstrate awareness of adult and children safeguarding responsibilities
Requirements:
• Current Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) approval
• Qualified Social Worker with Social Work England registration
• Extensive knowledge of Mental Health Act legislation and associated guidance
• Ability to work flexibly within a 24/7 service
• Commitment to ongoing professional development
• Enhanced DBS certificate
