About the Role:
Milton Keynes Council is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assessment Officer – Housing Benefits / Welfare to join their team. This role offers an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact within the local community by supporting residents to access their welfare and benefits entitlements, while working within a supportive local authority environment.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assess residents’ financial circumstances and identify opportunities to maximise income through benefits, grants, budgeting, and debt advice
• Conduct structured and sensitive interviews to gather relevant financial and personal information
• Provide clear, accurate advice on the UK welfare benefits system, including Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Personal Independence Payment, and other statutory entitlements
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and policy changes affecting welfare rights
• Maintain accurate records and use case management systems and online benefits tools effectively
• Manage a caseload efficiently, prioritising tasks and working independently or collaboratively within a team
• Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all interactions with residents and colleagues

Requirements:
• Strong working knowledge of the UK welfare benefits system and relevant legislation
• Proven experience supporting vulnerable residents in sensitive situations
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and empathetically
• IT literate, with experience using case management systems and online benefits tools
• Ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritise workload effectively
