About the Role:
We are currently recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Payroll Officer to join their team on a hybrid basis in Durham. This is a full-time, temporary role initially for 3 months, with a strong possibility of extension.
The postholder will support the delivery of a professional, efficient, and compliant payroll administration and advisory service across the organisation, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to statutory and organisational requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Payroll Processing & Administration:
β€’ Ensure employee remuneration aligns with contractual terms
β€’ Process payroll changes from HR source data, including starters, leavers, variations, deductions, and payments
β€’ Process timesheets, P45s, Attachments of Earnings, and other payroll amendments
β€’ Manage payroll adjustments relating to sickness and parental leave
β€’ Deliver accurate and timely monthly payroll runs across multiple terms and conditions
β€’ Prepare and submit salary information for HMRC and other relevant agencies

Compliance & Reporting:
β€’ Ensure compliance with statutory payments, deadlines, and submissions
β€’ Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation, policies, and procedures
β€’ Administer and submit pension contributions for multiple providers
β€’ Maintain and update pension scheme systems
β€’ Participate in payroll year-end and pension year-end processes
β€’ Ensure compliance with HMRC, the Pensions Regulator, DWP, and other legislative bodies
β€’ Support Finance colleagues by resolving payroll queries and post-payroll variances

Systems & Process Improvement:
β€’ Maintain payroll systems, including legislative updates and software enhancements
β€’ Work closely with HR to improve payroll processes and data flows
β€’ Review payroll processes and recommend continuous improvements
β€’ Support payroll data requirements for TUPE transfers
β€’ Assist with the development and review of payroll policies and procedures

Stakeholder Engagement:
β€’ Act as a key point of contact for payroll and salary-related queries
β€’ Provide accurate payroll information and advice to managers and employees
β€’ Collaborate with Finance to ensure timely payroll data for management accounts

Continuous Development:
β€’ Participate in ongoing training and professional development
β€’ Remain current with changes in payroll, pensions, and related legislation

Requirements:
β€’ Sound knowledge of payroll legislation including HMRC requirements, PAYE, NI, RTI, auto-enrolment, apprenticeship levy, and IR35/off-payroll working
β€’ Strong knowledge of computerised payroll and accounting systems
β€’ Advanced Excel skills and strong overall IT capability
β€’ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
β€’ Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
β€’ Ability to produce accurate reports and present information clearly
β€’ Strong customer service and stakeholder management skills
β€’ Excellent organisational and administrative skills
β€’ Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities
