Role Overview
As an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) and Child Protection Conference Chair, you will play a key role in overseeing the care plans for children and young people who are in need of protection, in care, or who are Care Leavers. You’ll provide an independent and objective review of each child’s situation, ensuring that the Local Authority is fulfilling its obligations effectively and advocating for the best interests of the child. When necessary, you will also challenge any instances of poor practice to improve outcomes and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Care Plan Reviews: Conduct regular reviews of care plans for children in need of protection, those in care, and Care Leavers. Ensure plans are being followed and are tailored to the needs of each child.
- Independent Oversight: Provide impartial oversight of each child’s case, ensuring that the child’s welfare and best interests are always prioritized.
- Monitoring and Advocacy: Track the performance of the Local Authority regarding child protection cases, addressing any issues in performance and challenging poor practice to safeguard high-quality care.
- Chairing Conferences: Lead Child Protection Conferences and reviews, facilitating discussions to develop and evaluate care plans in partnership with social workers, families, and other stakeholders.
- Resource Management: Assist the Team Manager by identifying resource needs, planning objectives, and ensuring cost-effective service delivery.
- Equality and Standards: Support the council’s vision of equality and inclusion in all activities, working to uphold high standards that provide equal opportunities.
Generic Responsibilities
- Supporting Team and Council Vision: Contribute to the Council’s overall objectives, fostering a positive, collaborative team culture.
- Service Planning: Work alongside the Team Manager to set and achieve team and service objectives, and deliver services efficiently within set timeframes.
- Performance Monitoring: Support the Team Manager in ensuring targets are met, highlighting potential issues, and implementing solutions.
Requirements
- Qualifications:
- Qualified Social Worker, registered with Social Work England.
- Experience:
- Strong background in child protection and safeguarding, with experience as an IRO or in a similar oversight role.
- Skilled in working with multi-agency teams and leading child protection conferences.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication and leadership skills for managing sensitive meetings and advocating for children.
- Strong organizational abilities to oversee multiple cases and ensure timely reviews and follow-ups.
